Shopify Catalog

Shopify Catalog is "a comprehensive global catalog of eligible products that are sold by stores on Shopify"1 — verbatim Shopify Help Center definition. AI channels — ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and AI Mode, Perplexity, Shop — read Catalog data to power product discovery, ranking, and recommendations.

Critical detail: Shopify states explicitly that "you can't opt out of Shopify Catalog itself"1. Merchants can block individual AI channels via Catalog access and Direct checkout settings, but they cannot remove their products from the underlying catalog. Eligibility is the upstream gate; channel-level toggling is the downstream control.

Definition

Shopify Catalog is a comprehensive global catalog of eligible products that are sold by stores on Shopify. AI channels — ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Shop — read Catalog data to power discovery, ranking, and recommendations. Verbatim definition from Shopify Help Center.

The verbatim Shopify Help Center page1 describes Catalog as the data substrate AI channels query when surfacing products to shoppers. The distribution surfaces Shopify names explicitly: Shop, select AI platforms, shopping sites, AI agents, and agentic storefronts ("Shopify's AI-powered storefronts"). Across the Shopify primary sources, the named AI channels surfacing Catalog data are ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and AI Mode, Perplexity, and Shop.

How Catalog feeds AI channels

Catalog is a Shopify-mediated data layer. Merchants populate the standard Shopify product admin fields; Shopify exposes the eligible subset to AI channels via Catalog. The channels read those fields and use them to rank, recommend, and (in direct-checkout channels) complete purchases inside the AI conversation.

The product fields Shopify says AI platforms read3: title, description, images, product organization (type, vendor, collections, tags), barcode (ISBN / UPC / GTIN / etc.), variants including option name, and external product URL (Agentic-plan stores only). The list overlaps Schema.org Product schema closely but is not identical — Shopify's Catalog is its own data layer with its own field mapping.

The channel-side mechanic differs. ChatGPT is described by Shopify as a "discovery-focused referrer platform"; customers complete purchases on the merchant's storefront via in-app browser or new tab. Other channels (Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Shop) support "direct purchasing" via Shopify-powered checkout inside the AI conversation. The shape of the order in admin is the same; the journey differs.

Where Shopify Catalog comes from

Shopify began building the Catalog data layer through 2024 - 2025 as ChatGPT shopping, Copilot, and AI Overviews moved from experimental to material traffic-shapers. The Winter '26 Edition (published December 2025) announced Catalog API and MCP general availability for all developers. The dedicated Agentic Storefronts admin page launched 11 May 2026.

Catalog is structurally distinct from Google Merchant Center. Where Merchant Center is a feed merchants opt into and configure, Catalog is the default data substrate for any Shopify store on Starter plan or higher with eligible products. Merchants don't sync to Catalog; their eligible products are in Catalog by Shopify's design.

Adoption status in 2026

Universal among eligible Shopify stores. Catalog is on by default; merchants do not opt in. AI-channel coverage is in early access for some channels (the dedicated /agentic admin page is 'not yet available for all Shopify stores') but rolling out by default to eligible stores.

The merchant-side adoption pattern in 2026 is: confirm eligibility, populate product fields per Shopify's optimization guidance3, verify products are showing up in the AI channels, monitor the /agentic admin page once available. Stores in eligible categories with clean product data are seeing material order volume; stores with the eligibility gaps (mature content, missing prices, Unlisted status) are not.

Eligibility and the install

Install order for getting into Shopify Catalog: (1) confirm store-level eligibility (plan, shipping, password, ToS); (2) audit every product against product-level eligibility (title, image, price, URL, status); (3) populate the optional fields AI channels read (barcode/GTIN, comprehensive description, variants with option names, organization tags); (4) wait the indexing window; (5) monitor /agentic admin for per-channel surfacing.

The fields-that-matter list is documented in Shopify's optimization-products page3. Comprehensive product descriptions with specs, comparisons, materials, and care instructions; barcode populated with GTIN; variants with option names; up-to-date store policies (returns, shipping). The optimization is high-value because the cost is low — every field is an admin-side edit, no code required.

The full install lives in Shopify Catalog. If you'd rather we do the eligibility audit plus the field-level optimization for you, ShopifyRanked does it in 7 days for $499.

Catalog sits at the centre of the Shopify AI-search architecture.

  • Agentic commerce: what Catalog feeds into.
  • Knowledge Base app: the FAQ layer paired with Catalog for AI store-policy answers.
  • GTIN: one of the product fields Shopify says AI platforms read.
  • Structured data: the schema layer that complements Catalog on the public web side.
  • Cluster 2A: full Shopify Catalog install treatment.
